We live in a society where it is so quick and easy to medicate ourselves. This is both a blessing and a curse – there are some things that require medical intervention and it shouldn’t be seen as something to be ashamed of, and certainly shouldn’t be resisted when necessary; however we are becoming more and more reliant on medicine and less so on taking care of ourselves.

 Our bodies were designed to eat food as close to its natural form as possible. Our diets should be balanced and varied in order to sustain good health but in a world that is fast paced and busy, we have designed a culture of fast, cheap and easy food. We want instant gratification and our lives are full of time consuming activities which don’t always allow us to spend time growing, cooking and eating wholesome food. Our food is laden with preservatives in order to keep it edible for longer and fresh food is becoming less and less prevalent, and is rarely a priority.


How can I make positive dietary changes with very little time and a lack of resources?

 It’s very possible to reshape our view on food and nutrition without it becoming all consuming. Start with small, simple changes – perhaps trying to support local farmers and vegetable growers by buying locally and seasonally, or aiming to try one new home cooked meal a week. It can be overwhelming trying to overhaul your lifestyle but by taking it step by step, and making changes where you can it will soon become a habit and a part of your daily life.

Understanding the health benefits of food

 You don’t need a medical or nutrition degree to learn about how food affects your physical and mental health. Start by focusing on how different foods make you feel – you probably know what it’s like to feel sluggish and lacking in energy after fast food or even not eating enough. Fuelling yourself with good, freshly cooked ingredients will in turn help to improve your mood, mental state and physical wellbeing.

Our mental health can be greatly affected by what we eat. How we feel about ourselves is a contributing factor to a positive mindset and can help to relieve anxiety, depression and low mood. It’s not a cure all – and you should continue to seek support and help if needed, however it can definitely help to alleviate some symptoms that are associated with mental health issues.
